How do APOs develop volunteer assignments?

If an APO has an existing relationship with an organisation in one of the countries listed with VIDA, then discuss the VIDA program and assignment proposal with that organisation. If this potential Host Organisation expresses interest, ask them to dowload the Host Organisation Info Pack and contact the In-Country Manager for that country.

If an APO is interested in developing a new relationship with a potential Host Organisation, then the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. These introductions occur with the involvement of the In-Country Manager for that country who provides advice to current and potential Host Organisations.

How to prepare a VIDA Assignment Proposal

Once an APO and its Host Organisation have identified a need for a VIDA volunteer, they are required to submit a joint Assignment Proposal to the VIDA Program. The Assignment Proposal form clearly sets out the information that VIDA requires in order to assess the proposal. A copy of the form can be downloaded here.
The VIDA Partnerships Coordinator can assist APOs to develop their assignment proposals whereas the In-Country Manager is a vital resource for the potential Host Organisation. It should be noted that the In-Country Manager must be consulted through the application process in order to ensure that the proposed assignment meets the priority sectors of that country.
The Host Organisation is then responsible for submitting the completed Assignment Proposal Form to the In-Country Manager.

Which Assignments get approved?

The VIDA Program considers a number of factors when assessing the suitability of proposed assignments, such as:
  • Does the assignment have a strong capacity building focus as assignments cannot replace local staff
  • Does the assignment encourage sustainable outcomes? The Volunteer should work towards outcomes that will continue to benefit the HO's work upon the Volunteer's departure
  • Country Quotas – the VIDA program is only able to support a certain number of assignments in each country per financial year
  • Does the assignment fit within the Country Volunteer Strategy which is identified by the Host Government and AusAID? Summaries of each CVS are available on request.
  • Does the Host Organisation have the capacity to host a Volunteer? This includes the provision of a workspace and the identification of a supervisor who will work closely with the Volunteer.
